For the third consecutive year, the company increased its score in the assessment used for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices

DJSI monitors the overall performance of the world's leading companies in the environmental, social and economic dimensions.

  • The company achieved a score of 78, an additional point in comparison with 2013 assessment
  • RobecoSAM, based in Switzerland, is the entity responsible for assessing companies for the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices

Putting innovation at the service of the people is one of the principles that rules the work EPM performs day by day to improve the quality of life of communities and build sustainable and competitive territories. These initiatives led the company to stand out once again in the RobecoSAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment, the methodology and database underlying the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices.

The General Manager of EPM and EPM Group leader, Juan Esteban Calle Restrepo, said that “the most important results of EPM, that motivate setting trends in the industry, are those associated with access to water, biodiversity, scorecards and measurement systems, price risk management and supply chain”. The executive added that “these are the result of consistent and effective teamwork among various departments of the organization looking to make sustainability a reality in the daily work, always thinking about the people”.

EPM was assessed by RobecoSAM in order to compare their sustainability performance with the main corporate leaders of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices – DJSI- within the Multi and Water Utilities industry. This is the third time the company is voluntarily evaluated under these indices which monitor the overall performance of the world's leading companies in the environmental, social and economic dimensions.

EPM, the only Colombian company assessed in this industry, scored 78 out of 100 points, which represents a one point increase compared to 2013. The company is six points far from United Utilities Group PLC, the industry-leading company which is the largest provider of water services in the United Kingdom. In the overall ranking, EPM was positioned above the 89% of the companies in the industry. Outstanding companies such as AGL Energy Ltd., RWE AG, Sempra Energy, Suez Environnement Co. and Cia de Saneamento Basico do Estado de Sao Paulo are part of the Multi and Water Utilities industry this year.

Compared with the results obtained last year, EPM made tangible progress in aspects such as stakeholder engagement, electricity generation, environmental reporting and market opportunities. Also, opportunities for improvement were identified on issues related to talent attraction and retention, operational eco-efficiency, transmission and distribution and water operations. From these results, a plan that seeks to incorporate best practices and innovate with new products and services was set, based on actions implemented by leading companies, so that EPM will trace a path of continuous improvement, strengthen links with stakeholders and remain at the forefront of sustainable management.

On the assessment

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indices assessment is conducted by the firm RobecoSAM, based in Switzerland, and determines the advancement level of the companies in the economic, social and environmental dimensions. The results serve financial analysts to structure their investment portfolios integrating sustainability considerations. Some other Colombian companies participating in this assessment are ISAGEN, Grupo Argos, Empresa de Energía de Bogotá, Celsia, and Ecopetrol.

With actions such as the Corporate Sustainability Assessment, the EPM Group reiterates its commitment to contribute to the building of sustainable and competitive territories.
